Privacy at Bookniac
The Short Version
You don't need an account to use Bookniac. In the current version of the site, the reading lists, check-ins and reader names you add are saved in your browser on this device, and Bookniac's app code does not send them to Bookniac's servers.
That doesn't mean no information is sent anywhere. Loading the site involves Cloudflare, which hosts Bookniac and provides its visit statistics, and Google Fonts. Other services are involved only when you send feedback, follow a link to another site, or choose to share. Each is explained below.
What Stays in Your Browser
The current app code saves the following in your browser's local storage (localStorage): the reader names you add, each reader's Want to Read and Reading Now lists, and the books checked in on each date.
To let the guide work offline, a service worker keeps copies of the site's pages and app files in your browser's cache.
Clearing this site's data in your browser settings removes the saved lists, check-ins, reader names and offline copies from that browser. It does not delete backup files or images you saved to your device, and it does not delete anything you already shared or sent to another service, such as a feedback form response.
Backups, Images and Sharing
Backup Now saves a file to your device containing all saved readers, lists and check-ins. Restore reads a backup file in your browser. The app code does not upload either one.
Book cards and reading-passbook images are created in your browser. A passbook image shows the reader's name, the date, reading totals and the titles and dates of recent check-ins.
Creating an image doesn't send it anywhere. It leaves your device only if you save it and send it yourself, or choose an app from your device's share menu; that app then receives the image. The Weibo, X, Facebook, WhatsApp, Messages and email buttons open that service with a prefilled message and Bookniac's web address (for a passbook, the message includes the streak and number of books read); they don't attach the image. Copy Link copies only Bookniac's web address.
Cloudflare Hosting
Bookniac is hosted on Cloudflare. When your browser loads a page, it connects to Cloudflare's network, and Cloudflare receives the technical information that comes with any web request, such as your IP address, browser type and the page requested. What Cloudflare records about these requests, and for how long, depends on Cloudflare's services and settings. Cloudflare's privacy policy describes its practices.
Cloudflare Privacy PolicyVisit Statistics
Bookniac uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to see aggregate statistics such as visits, page views and page-load speed. To do this, a small Cloudflare script runs on each page and sends Cloudflare information about that page view, such as the page address (without query strings), the referring site, page-load timing, and your browser, operating system, device type and country.
The information Cloudflare documents for Web Analytics does not include your saved reading lists, check-ins or reader names.
Cloudflare states that “Cloudflare Web Analytics does not use any client-side state, such as cookies or localStorage, to collect usage metrics.” That statement is about Web Analytics; other Cloudflare services may work differently.
What Web Analytics ReportsCloudflare Web AnalyticsCloudflare Privacy PolicyFonts
Bookniac's fonts load from Google Fonts. When a page loads, your browser requests them from Google's servers (fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com), so Google receives the technical information that comes with these requests, such as your IP address and browser type.
Google Fonts Privacy FAQFeedback Form
The Feedback form opens in a pop-up from Feedback in the site menu, the Feedback card on the Me tab, or the button below. It is a short form on Bookniac, and opening it doesn't load anything from Google Forms. When you press Send, your answers are submitted to Google Forms. If sending fails, an “Open the Form in a New Tab” link opens the same form on Google Forms. The form asks what your feedback is about and for details, and has an optional field for contact information.
Your answers are submitted through Google Forms and can be viewed by the people who manage the form. Google's privacy policy applies to how Google handles them. Please don't include a child's name or personal details that aren't needed for your feedback.
Google Privacy PolicyLinks to Other Sites
Some services are contacted as soon as a page loads (Cloudflare and Google Fonts, described above). Other sites are contacted only when you choose them: when you tap a link, your browser connects to that site, which receives the technical information that comes with the request, and that site's own privacy policy applies.
Amazon and Kindle buttons are affiliate links: they include Bookniac's Amazon Associates tag so Amazon can credit Bookniac for qualifying purchases. An Amazon button opens a product page or an Amazon search; a Kindle button opens an Amazon search.
Library Search (WorldCat) and Libby (OverDrive) buttons are not affiliate links; they open a title search on those sites. Sharing buttons are described under Backups, Images and Sharing.
Children
Bookniac is a book guide for families. The reader names you add, which may be a child's name or nickname, are saved only in your browser by the current app code, and the app code does not send them to Bookniac's servers. A reader's name can leave your device if you share a reading-passbook image or send someone a backup file.
Please don't enter a child's name or other personal details in the Feedback form.
